I would like to thank everyone that has contacted us here at DESC Computers this year for their support! We wouldn’t be here without you.
I would like to take this chance to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.
May you enjoy your time with your family and friends and remember those that cannot be with us on these special times, especially our dearly departed loved ones!
Well the first lot of Santa Letters (and a couple of Elf on the Shelf) have been received and boy oh boy have the children been happy with them and the parents!!
If you want to order your very own Santa Letter – please place your order HERE
Like everyone, I love looking around Facebook. All the cute cats (yes, I am a cat crazy person), good luck stories, bad luck stories, stories and pictures of friends and family – absolutely everything that is out there for the world to see!
The other night I decided to read a “feel good story” – next thing I know a man is telling me through my speakers that my computer has been blocked!
He tells me that I can’t shut the browser or my computer will shut down and never start again and that I need to contact Microsoft immediately before I lose everything.
Well blow me down with a feather – I decided to tempt fate and all that there is holy – I CLOSED THE BROWSER!
What happened next just took my breath away – NOTHING! Why did nothing happen? I have ESET Internet Security and it grabbed the trojan as it was trying to access my computer and deleted the file. No Harm, No Foul! It did pop up a really nice image that “could have been” Microsoft – but it wasn’t
Beware what you click on when surfing the net. It can look harmless enough – but is it really ?
I use a couple of things to keep my (and my clients) computers safe – Addons to my browsers
WOT – Web of Trust – it works like a traffic light – showing what the rating of the websites are.
Green – Safe
Amber – Be Careful
Red – STOP!!
ABP – Adblock Plus – stops those annoying Pop-Ups – but it can sometimes block good popups too – so you do need to be aware!
Who hasn’t received an email telling them that a “distant relative has died and they are the sole beneficiary” or UPS (United Parcel Service) has a parcel for you. All you have to do is “click the link” to arrange a delivery. Yes – they are scams, along with the following that we received here in our inbox this week.
The Original Email
Our first we received was a MyGov email – I knew I was a MyGov member so I looked it over carefully before taking these screenshots, then DELETING the email
Showing the information
Firstly look closely at the email – you will see things a little different to a real MyGov email
The worst thing about these emails – they are done for no real purpose other than infecting your computer with a virus and cause you a major headache.
Most likely CryptoLocker Virus
Then we received one from Australia Post – yes we get many parcels delivered to our address and sometimes miss them. When I received this email – I had to look twice then again I hovered over the link – as guess what – another fake! This time I was suppose to download the file – print out the attachement and visit Australia Post. The minute I had of opened the zip file – there goes the virus, right through my computer – Probably a virus called “CryptoLocker” Nasty NASTY virus that holds your files to ransom – 9/10 times irretrievable files.
Good ‘ol Apple
Lastly for the day good old Apple Email stating that my case was still opened and unless I solved the problem, they would terminate my account. Trojan based website again.
PLEASE PLEASE remember – make sure you have a reputable antivirus program, always keep your definitions up-to-date and that your program is scanning regularly.
We use and sell ESET Antivirus (Internet Security) – That’s how we know exactly what these emails are sending us. Those links would have infected our computers – yes, even our Mac computers – and the viruses/trojans/malware tried – by ESET stood true to it’s word and protected us.
Did I download the zip file from Australia Post and “test” the CryptoLocker virus against ESET ? No, we like to push the boundaries here, but NEVER EVER with a zip/exe file! Those people can be WAY ahead of most of the antivirus programs out there and we like our computers WAY TO MUCH! Stay save out there!
Need a great antivirus or internet security that is not going to leave you wondering if it is working, or worse still – let’s you know only when it’s TOO LATE that it’s not working and you need the other services that we provide. Well we have the best there is !
We use and sell ESET – why ? Because we only like the best in life !
