Who’s Excited ?

Who’s Excited ?

Here at DESC Computers we are excited. A new iPhone is to be released and we WANT it !!

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are open to pre-orders on now with the release of the phones on Friday September 22nd.

If you are like us, we are waiting for the iPhone X or Ten, whatever you wish to call it – the release date for the X is Friday November 3rd, but pre-orders start at 6:01pm AEDT on October 27th – not that we are counting down the time – oh boy are we counting down the time!!!

Why are we choosing the X ? In our opinion why upgrade to something similar to what we have (we have the iPhone 7) that look and feel the same. Yes, we know it’s faster and slimmer and blah blah but we want the new NEW one! Like all gadgets, we like to BE THERE FIRST !

If you want to compare the 8 to the 10 below is an article that we found the most useful

FaceBook TALKED to me!

FaceBook TALKED to me!

PopUp on Facebook

Like everyone, I love looking around Facebook. All the cute cats (yes, I am a cat crazy person), good luck stories, bad luck stories, stories and pictures of friends and family – absolutely everything that is out there for the world to see!

The other night I decided to read a “feel good story” – next thing I know a man is telling me through my speakers that my computer has been blocked!

He tells me that I can’t shut the browser or my computer will shut down and never start again and that I need to contact Microsoft immediately before I lose everything.

Well blow me down with a feather – I decided to tempt fate and all that there is holy – I CLOSED THE BROWSER!

What happened next just took my breath away –  NOTHING! Why did nothing happen? I have ESET Internet Security and it grabbed the trojan as it was trying to access my computer and deleted the file. No Harm, No Foul! It did pop up a really nice image that “could have been” Microsoft – but it wasn’t

Beware what you click on when surfing the net. It can look harmless enough – but is it really ?

I use a couple of things to keep my (and my clients) computers safe – Addons to my browsers

WOT – Web of Trust – it works like a traffic light – showing what the rating of the websites are.

  • Green – Safe
  • Amber – Be Careful
  • Red – STOP!!

ABP – Adblock Plus – stops those annoying Pop-Ups – but it can sometimes block good popups too – so you do need to be aware!

Fake Microsoft Trojan

Have you been caught ?

Have you been caught ?

Who hasn’t received an email telling them that a “distant relative has died and they are the sole beneficiary” or UPS (United Parcel Service) has a parcel for you. All you have to do is “click the link” to arrange a delivery. Yes – they are scams, along with the following that we received here in our inbox this week.

The Original Email

Our first we received was a MyGov email – I knew I was a MyGov member so I looked it over carefully before taking these screenshots, then DELETING the email

Showing the information

Firstly look closely at the email – you will see things a little different to a real MyGov email

The worst thing about these emails – they are done for no real purpose other than infecting your computer with a virus and cause you a major headache.

Most likely CryptoLocker Virus

Then we received one from Australia Post – yes we get many parcels delivered to our address and sometimes miss them. When I received this email – I had to look twice then again I hovered over the link – as guess what – another fake! This time I was suppose to download the file – print out the attachement and visit Australia Post. The minute I had of opened the zip file – there goes the virus, right through my computer – Probably a virus called “CryptoLocker” Nasty NASTY virus that holds your files to ransom – 9/10 times irretrievable files.

Good ‘ol Apple

Lastly for the day good old Apple Email stating that my case was still opened and unless I solved the problem, they would terminate my account. Trojan based website again.

PLEASE PLEASE remember – make sure you have a reputable antivirus program, always keep your definitions up-to-date and that your program is scanning regularly.

We use and sell ESET Antivirus (Internet Security) – That’s how we know exactly what these emails are sending us. Those links would have infected our computers – yes, even our Mac computers – and the viruses/trojans/malware tried – by ESET stood true to it’s word and protected us.

Did I download the zip file from Australia Post and “test” the CryptoLocker virus against ESET ? No, we like to push the boundaries here, but NEVER EVER with a zip/exe file! Those people can be WAY ahead of most of the antivirus programs out there and we like our computers WAY TO MUCH! Stay save out there!

The Aftermath of Santa’s Letters

The Aftermath of Santa’s Letters

Rylan’s Letter

The Santa letters this year were amazing. From something that started as letters for my Great Nieces (3 of them in 2014) to 48 letters this year! Wow – Santa sure was busy 🙂 The way it went this year – you better get in early for 2017 Christmas is you want to receive a special letter from Santa.

I have had some amazing feedback – thank you everyone!

Lovely emails and messages but I wanted to share with you the video that a friend sent of her special time with her partner and son. Santa’s letter hinted at a special surprise for Rylan (wait for the end of the video – priceless) – Thank you again Rikki for allowing us to share this with your family

Other Feedback from happy families

Just wanted to thank you so much for the Santa Letters. The kids were so excited and couldn’t believe they all got a special letter from Santa. They all believed 100% the letters were from him. Marie read them out one by one with each child sitting on her knee, the look on their little faces was priceless. There were 12 adult sitting and watching and many of them had tears just watching the magic, it was so special.

Thanks again Santa you made our day xxx

Hello Santa,

Thank you for the magic letters, the boys especially Logan were delighted with their Santa Letters. His eyes almost popped from his head when he found out Santa knew he watched too much T.V . Brandon thought it funny that Santa thinks a lot like his mum – lol! He was delighted Santa thought I was on the naughty list. OHHHHH and those glitter elves, I love glitter even it’s all over my kitchen and even had it on my face, I’m sure I was a Bower Bird in a  past life.

Hope you have a MAGICAL CHRISTMAS AND BEAUTIFUL NEW YEAR…X
